Reasons for the Technicalities
I am a professional artist. I make part of my living by selling original artworks and the rights to license the reproduction of images derived from them. That is why making note that these images are Copyrighted and controlling their distribution is so important to me. Why?
I have worked very hard producing the artworks displayed on these pages, putting my time, money, heart, sweat and even blood into them often spending MANY hours sometimes freezing (or boiling!) outside waiting for just the right, often fleeting, light effect. In addition, extensive research is often needed to produce some of these pieces, and it has taken years to aquire the skills and tools required to translate my impressions onto canvas. Last but certainly not least the inherent costs of the raw materials themselves are often extremely high.
Because of these reasons, I believe it is my moral right to protect my artworks and the images produced from them and decide how they are used. The Copyright law was established to give creative artists the legal right to such protection, and the right to profit from their labours, and to encourage more creation from these profits.
Really, it's simple. If someone wants to use my images commercially, in a venture they expect to profit from, then I want to share in that profit. This concept certainly seems reasonable and fair to me, and I hope to others.
I often get requests from individuals who want to use some of these images in a non-commercial way, particularly for educational purposes. Please, just contact me and ask, I will usually grant permission for personal use. Although, for instance, I would probably not let them be used in any type of ideological, political, or religous way.
Sometimes I also get asked if someone can use my images on their web sites, and I usually say no. This is because if people can see my images in other places, then they have no reason to visit my web site. Also, I have no way of guaranteeing that the Copyright explanation, and contact information stay with the image. Putting a link to my pages is ok though.
If you just want to use these images on your computer as wall paper for personal use, that is a right granted to you by the Copyright law. Please feel free to download them and use them, but on your computer only. You may not give them away to others, as distribution is a right granted to me, the creator, by the Copyright law. Rather, please point them in the direction of my web site, where they can download them for themselves. This may seem curious, but there is a reason. If they get them by being passed from hand to hand, then many of those people will not visit my web site and see the totality of what I have offered there. Some of these people may visit and buy originals or prints. Others may visit and find something else that they may use commercially.
Now, making money is not the primary reason I became a professional artist. I did it to record, for myself, the beauty and wonder of the world around us. I enjoy sharing this beauty with others, hence a public web site. But making some money from my art helps me support myself, and while I wish it was different, it's not a perfect world.
So please, if you are interested in using these images for any reason, don't hesitate to ask.
Thanks!
