MARINE
It
should come as no surprise that Britain can boast such a strong marine
art heritage -- 6000 miles of coastline offers an infinite variety of
subjects and challenges for the artist, not least in the handling of
colour and texture in a higher than usual concentration. The very atmosphere
on the coast is different -- thicker, and yet more infinite in its subtlety
and more infuriating in its capacity to taunt the painter with feelings
of inadequacy and despair. But no matter whether at home or abroad,
I try to respond creatively to the spirit of place, atmosphere and subject,
be it river, coast, or estuary.
